SC 214: Am I Still Sick? Class presentation available.

What Do Those Medical Lab Test Results Mean?

Have you ever wondered about those numbers on the laboratory sheets that report your blood and urine test results?  Why does the phlebotomist fill so many vials?  What measurements assess kidney and liver function?  Why is my doctor concerned about one outlying value and not another?  A one-session lecture will update a similar class given five years ago and will describe the concepts behind these tests, the current analytical instrumentation, and what to expect from medical labs five years in the future.  Ample time will be allotted for questions, examples, and discussion.

Presenter/Developer: Vern Roohk, Ph.D., Physiology and Biochemistry, University of California, Davis, specializing in blood  chemistry and endocrinology.  Vern is an OLLI Science Committee member who is still working as an independent biomedical consultant specializing in medical  device evaluation.
