SS 309: The American Healthcare System Update. Class presentation available.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 (Obamacare) is the largest piece of health care legislation ever enacted in the United States. The bill, ten titles or parts, covers eight general themes with only one that accesses care for the uninsured. Today there is general confusion and very little factual understanding in the general population regarding what the ACA is intended to accomplish. This two-session course will cover:

  • Past attempts at health care reform and why they failed.
  • How “Obamacare” was able to get passed this time around.
  • The theories that the law is based on.
  • What is in the law.
  • How the law will likely be changed and improved in the future.
  • How the law will affect the way healthcare is delivered in the future.
  • How the changes will be paid for.

This course is an in-depth overview of healthcare in the United States that will help people better understand the rapidly changing U.S. healthcare system that will impact all of our lives for many years to come. It will update the very popular Fall 2013 class by Dr. Murphy. Presenter: Dr. Robert Murphy, M.D., M.P.H., is an orthopedic surgeon recently retired after 38 years of practice at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage.  Dr. Murphy completed his orthopedic training  at UCSD and has a Master’s degree in Public Health from UCLA.  He has a career-long interest in U.S. healthcare policy. He and his wife Linda (a nurse           educator) remain active in orthopedics through their consulting firm, Murphy     Consulting Group.
