What is a blog?

A blog (also called a weblog or web log) is a website made up of entries (also called posts) listed in reverse date and time order with the most recent entry appearing first (similar in format to a daily journal). Blogs usually include features such as comments and links to increase user involvement.

Navigating the OLLI Blog

Follow these guidelines when roaming around the OLLI Blog to make your journey easier.

Use Navigating the Olli at UCI Blog for a summary of directions, or read the remainder of this page for more detailed instructions.

Home Page

The OLLI Blog is similar to a newspaper. It contains a front (Home) page and several sections.  The Home page contains short summaries of stories posted on the blog. The Home page tab is located near the top of the blog along with other pages that when clicked on will take you to different places (sections) within the blog.

Click on the HOME page tab to return to the front page of the blog. Exceptions: If you have opened a document or class presentation, or if you have clicked on a link, then you must use the Back Arrow on your internet browser to return to the blog.

Articles posted to the blog appear in the large, white area of the Home page. Articles are posted in chronological order with the newest story at the top followed by older stories.

BACK Arrow

The Back Arrow is located in the top, left corner of the blog and faces in the left direction.

The Back Arrow is useful after you open a document (ie. OLLI newsletter or a class presentation) or if you click on any links. The Back arrow returns you to the OLLI blog. Rule of thumb for using the Back arrow – if the page you are viewing does not show the Home page tab, then you must use the Back arrow to return to the blog.

Scrolling Down and Up the Page

Use the PageUp/PageDown keys, the ArrowUp/ArrowDown keys or the vertical scroll bar to move down and up the page.

Older Entries

At the bottom of the Home page is an ‘Older entries…’ link. Click this link to view all the remaining stories that have been posted to the Home page of the blog.

As with a newspaper, the full story is usually not found on the front (Home) page. The story continues on another section and page.  On the blog, a ‘Read more…’ link located below the story summary will direct you to the full story.  Click the ‘Read more…’ link and the full length story automatically opens.

Categories make it easier to quickly locate articles about specific topics. For example, if you are looking for all postings related to Sciences, then click on the Sciences (SC) category link. If you want to search only for Science-releated articles posted in Fall 2010, then click on the SC – Fall 2010 category link. To read the full story under a specific posting, point and click on the posting title.

Links are available to a wide range of sites. Links are located in the sidebar on the right side of the OLLI blog. Point and click on the link name. The internet page associated with that link name will display. Click the Back Arrow on the internet browser to return to the OLLI blog.

The “Search” box is located in the right, bottom section of the Header. Use the Search box to search for a specific article by using keywords related to the article. For example, if you are searching for articles posted that included the word ‘WWII’, type the keyword WWII into the Search box and press the Enter key on your keyboard. Click on the posting title to open and read the full article.
